About the Job: Summer Intern for Control Management
This is a Summer Intern for Control Management position within the Credit & Fraud Risk (CFR) unit at American Express.
Role Purpose and Impact:
The intern will play a crucial supporting role across various Control Management teams, gaining practical experience in key areas such as governance, risk identification, assessment, testing & reporting, issues management, and process risk reduction. This generalist position provides an excellent opportunity to collaborate with different teams and contribute significantly to the organization’s overall operational risk management objectives.
Key Responsibilities Include:
• Operational Risk Management Support: Assisting in the implementation of operational risk management plans within CFR, including monitoring issues related to Key Risk Indicator (KRI) limits and helping integrate regulatory changes into governance frameworks.
• Risk Identification and Assessment: Helping identify operational risks within business processes and systems, and supporting the facilitation of risk assessments and testing programs to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
• Issues Management and Remediation: Supporting the investigation and root cause analysis of recurring issues within CFR, aiding in effective remediation and prevention of future risks. This involves tracking progress, validating the efficacy of resolutions, and communicating status updates to stakeholders throughout the issue remediation process.
• Reporting and Monitoring: Assisting in maintaining risk dashboards, monitoring KRIs, and compiling thematic risk reports to provide actionable insights on emerging trends and systemic risks.
• Control Design and Process Improvement: Categorizing controls and mapping them against risks and processes to enhance risk management practices. This also involves conducting root cause analyses to identify process vulnerabilities, documenting control design effectiveness, and monitoring the implementation of process changes to ensure optimal risk reduction and alignment with the organization’s risk appetite.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a Graduate-level degree program.
• Expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios.
• Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly within a team-oriented, matrix organization.
• Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Interest in Risk Management: A keen interest in operational risk management, governance, issues management, and process risk reduction.
• Industry Familiarity: Familiarity with financial services or related industries is advantageous but not strictly required.
• Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); experience with data analysis tools is a plus.
• Teamwork: Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Salary & Benefits:
• Salary Range: $38.45 to $87.00 hourly, plus a sign-on bonus. (Actual pay will consider location, experience, and other job-related factors).
