The Tone:
This is an internship at Newport News Shipbuilding, located in Newport News, VA. The company is Virginia’s largest industrial employer and the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers, as well as one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Interns join a team collaborating at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration to create the world’s most powerful naval ships. This program offers students invaluable experience in technical or administrative positions, fostering professional development and offering potential for future full-time employment within the organization.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Technical & Administrative Engagement: Participate in projects and tasks within technical or administrative functions that support company business requirements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a degreed undergraduate or graduate program, completing at least one year of coursework by May, and continuing enrollment in the fall following the internship. Degree programs typically supporting the company’s business requirements include Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, Business, Management, Accounting, and Economics/Finance.
• Experience: No specific prior professional experience is explicitly required; candidates must have completed at least one year of college or university coursework by May.
• Skills: Ability to work a full-time, 40-hour week for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer; maintenance of a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (official transcripts will be required); successful completion of a criminal background investigation and a hair follicle drug screen; must be at least 18 years of age before the start of the summer intern program (Mid-May).
