Job Description (SUMMER COLLEGE INTERN – 10234)

This summer college intern position is with the New York City Department of Probation (DOP).

The Department of Probation (DOP)
The DOP’s core mission is to build stronger and safer communities. It achieves this by working with and supervising individuals on probation, aiming to foster positive changes in their decision-making and behavior. A key aspect of their work is to expand opportunities for these individuals to successfully transition out of the criminal and juvenile justice systems. This is facilitated through meaningful engagement in education, employment, health services, community and family involvement, and civic participation. The DOP has locations across all five boroughs of New York City and provides four primary services: pre-sentence investigations, intake, diversion, and probation supervision. In essence, the DOP ensures that individuals entering their system receive supervision tailored to their risk level, along with the necessary support and services to abide by the law and become valuable assets to their communities.

Juvenile Operations & CARES Unit
This specific role falls under Juvenile Operations, which serves young people aged 7 to 18 at the time of their alleged offense. For these youth, a disposition may involve Probation supervision, offering them a chance to demonstrate their ability to function effectively in the community. This includes making positive behavioral changes and developing better decision-making skills to prevent further delinquent activity.

The internship is specifically for the CARES Unit. CARES stands for Culture, Arts, Recreation, and Education of NYC.
Purpose: The CARES Unit is responsible for organizing and implementing pro-social summer activities, trips, and programming for all youth involved with probation. A particular focus is placed on youth who present with risk factors on the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS) and have a need for structured leisure time activities.
Goals: The activities are designed to expand the worldview and experiences of the youth, introducing them to the rich culture, arts, recreation, and education opportunities available in NYC and its surrounding areas.
Activities Offered: Youth will engage in a diverse range of programming, including interactive dance, fitness and artistic teachings, theatre performances, sporting events and instruction, visits to college campuses, restaurants, and museums.
Scope: These activities and programming will operate citywide.
Overall Aim: The unit’s efforts aim to expose youth to the world of arts and culture to foster healthy existences within their communities.

Coordinator Responsibilities
The intern, in a Coordinator role, will be responsible for:
Service Delivery & Program Development: Coordinating a wide range of positive activities, trips, and lessons across all five boroughs.
Program Design: Designing and implementing specific programming and curricula focused on leadership through arts and culture, health and wellness, and recreational activities that promote learning.
Scheduling: Scheduling and maintaining a daily calendar of activities, including groups, organized games, team sports, free play, field trips, and academic enrichment.
Communication: Maintaining communication with staff when in the field.
Quality Assurance: Monitoring and maintaining work standards to ensure appropriate supervision and programming are delivered.
Safety & Well-being: Ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth by enforcing policies and procedures.
Relationship Building: Building strong and positive relationships with youth aged 12-17.
Role Modeling: Serving as a positive role model, leading by example, encouraging educational success and appropriate behavior, and maintaining a positive and respectful attitude.
Meetings & Training: Attending any mandatory meetings or orientations, both on and off-site.
Safety Enforcement: Conveying and enforcing safety regulations at all times.
Record Keeping: Collecting and maintaining comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate records, including attendance.
Reporting: Preparing weekly reports.
