Summer 2026 – Project Management Student (Co-op/Intern)

Company: Tampa Electric Company

Location: North Ruskin, Florida (Primary Physical Location: Big Bend Station, CM Building 13031 Wyandotte Road Gibsonton, FL 33534)

Shift: Full-time, Monday – Friday, typically 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (40 hours per week)

Position Summary

The TECO Energy Cooperative Education Program offers an exceptional opportunity for college degree-seeking students to gain invaluable professional growth and practical experience, directly complementing their formal classroom education. This program is designed to provide meaningful and challenging work consistent with departmental and company needs.

As a Project Management Co-op/Intern, you will report directly to Energy Supply Project Managers and play a crucial role in supporting a diverse range of technical projects. These projects will vary significantly in complexity, scope, and timeframes, offering a broad exposure to the energy sector. Your work will involve a split between commercial projects (e.g., office building renovations, new construction) and industrial projects (e.g., power generation maintenance, facility improvements).

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Actively support Energy Supply Project Managers on technical projects across various complexities.
  • Contribute to both commercial (office buildings) and industrial (power generation) project types.
  • Engage in hands-on work approximately 50% of the time within power stations and service areas.
  • Be prepared and able to work at heights on raised walkways and in demanding industrial environments.
  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to work at various operational facilities, including:
    • Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach, FL
    • Bayside Power Station in Tampa, FL
    • Polk Power Station in Mulberry, FL
    • Other operational facilities (distribution, solar, etc.) as project needs arise.

Working Conditions

  • A dynamic combination of Plant/Field and Office environments.
  • Must be willing and able to work in potentially dusty, hot, and noisy industrial settings.

Qualifications

Education & Program Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited university in a college undergraduate or graduate-level post-secondary educational program.
  • Required Degree: Enrolled in an accredited Project Management or Construction Management program.
  • Year in School: Junior or Senior.
  • Minimum GPA: A strong academic record with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required.
  • Co-op Requirement: Enrollment in your university’s official co-op program (proof of enrollment required). If a co-op program is unavailable or you are not eligible, you will be considered an intern.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, essential for collaborative project environments.
  • A basic understanding of project management principles, including scheduling and cost control processes.
  • Familiarity with different contract types and contract administration.
  • Proficient working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to effectively analyze schedule and cost data and identify discrepancies.
