About the Company:
The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office offers internship programs across various semesters, including an eight-week summer program. The office is located in Mineola and Hempstead, NY.
Job Description: Summer 2025 Law Internship Program
The Summer Law Internship Program is an unpaid, voluntary eight-week position. Interns will be assigned to one of twelve major bureaus, including (but not limited to):
• District Court Trial Bureau (misdemeanors)
• County Court Trial Bureau (felonies)
• Organized Crime
• Narcotics
• Firearms and Gangs
• Vehicular Crimes
• Appeals
• Public Corruption
Responsibilities:
Interns will gain exposure to the inner workings of a prosecutor’s office through:
• Observing witness interviews and court proceedings.
• Assisting attorneys with all phases of prosecutions (where feasible), including case preparation for grand jury presentations, hearings, trials, or appeals.
• Conducting legal research.
• Drafting correspondence and memos.
• Assisting with file organization and case management.
• Reviewing, redacting, and compiling discovery materials.
• Performing administrative tasks such as filing, copying, scanning, answering phones, and scheduling meetings.
Additional Opportunities:
The program also includes visits and tours of relevant law enforcement entities, such as:
• Nassau County Correctional Facility
• Office of the Medical Examiner’s laboratories (ballistics, DNA, toxicology, and latent print)
• Nassau County Police Department’s training facility
Bureau Placement:
While bureau requests are considered, final placements are based on the office’s needs.
Qualifications:
The internship is open to first, second, and third-year law students, as well as a limited number of junior or senior undergraduate students with a demonstrated interest in criminal justice. Strong candidates possess excellent research, verbal, and writing skills and are committed to public service.
Financial Assistance:
Although unpaid, the office assists students in applying for grants (obtained by the student), work-study programs, or externships for course credit. Applicants are encouraged to seek information about funding options from their financial aid offices and public interest career advisors.
Post-Internship Opportunities:
Successful interns may be invited to a panel interview for an Assistant District Attorney position during their second or third year of law school.
