Job Description: Summer 2025 Internship – Train Control Systems Support
This internship supports the development and implementation of train control projects, with a focus on Positive Train Control (PTC) systems. The intern will participate in design, construction, and commissioning planning and review meetings. Responsibilities include:
• Supporting field implementation: Assisting division and production teams in implementing modifications to Amtrak’s train control system and resolving technical issues. This includes supporting signal installation work, developing and reviewing test plans, attending field cutovers, and documenting any field changes.
• Configuration management: Supporting the configuration management process to ensure train control design files, databases, and software are up-to-date and properly maintained.
• Problem-solving and direction: Managing solutions to individual train control design problems and providing direction to train control, maintenance, and production staff. This may also involve managing other staff and consultant train control design personnel.
• Documentation: Maintaining documentation of all comments for design and implementation plans, both internal and external.
• Program development: Assisting in the development of the C&S department’s annual capital and maintenance programs.
• Manual maintenance: Supporting the development of signal maintenance practices, procedures, and inspections through maintenance of AMT-23, AMT-27, and other C&S manuals.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
• Actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering.
• At least 3 years of completed undergraduate studies or senior status.
• Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Pursuit of a master’s degree in engineering.
• Previous railroad experience.
• Knowledge of railroad operations, construction, and maintenance practices.
• Working knowledge of C&S equipment and infrastructure (PTC systems, interlocking, ABS, crossing and defect detection systems, voice radio systems, and network communication systems).
• Knowledge of FRA standards, rules, and regulations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools, SharePoint, and ability to learn configuration management and database software applications.
• Demonstrated experience in oral and written communication.
Work Conditions: Combination of office and field work, requiring the ability to work in various weather conditions. Travel is estimated at up to 25%. The hourly range is $17.50 – $35.00 per hour, depending on factors like school year and program of study. Benefits include Amtrak rail pass privileges and one PTO day per academic year. The internship runs from May 19th to August 8th, 2025.
