Job Description: Summer 2025 Geotechnical Engineering Internship/Co-op
Terracon is seeking students pursuing a BS or MS degree in civil, geotechnical, or geological engineering for summer 2025 internships (May-August) and co-ops (May-December). Opportunities are available nationwide, including Billings and Great Falls, Montana.
Internship/Co-op Focus: The program supports Terracon’s Geotechnical service line. Interns will gain hands-on experience working with experienced engineers and state-of-the-art technology. The program emphasizes both technical skill development and professional growth.
Mentorship and Professional Development: Each intern will be assigned a mentor who will provide guidance on career planning and technical skills. Interns will learn about client interaction, the differences between consulting and design engineering, and the fundamentals of consulting engineering. Participation in a company-wide intern cohort fosters networking and collaboration, culminating in a final presentation to executive leadership.
Learning Opportunities: Interns will learn about:
• Laboratory safety and safe work practices
• All aspects of laboratory testing capabilities and test purposes
• Soil test procedures (ASTM, DOT, COE, etc.)
• Field exploration team shadowing
• Data review
• Report preparation
• Proposal creation
• Basics of project management
• Communication of test results (internal and external)
• Introduction to GeoReport
• Quality management system and procedures
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
• Performing sampling or testing as directed.
• Seeking learning opportunities from mentor.
• Providing assistance to field and/or laboratory personnel.
• Assisting other technicians or professional staff on routine tasks.
• Progressively increased role of training and responsibility in work assignments.
• Creating and presenting a final presentation to leadership on summer experiences.
Requirements:
• High school diploma and pursuit of a BS or Master’s degree in civil or geotechnical engineering.
• Ideally, less than one year remaining to complete the BS or MS degree.
