Job Description
The City of Santa Clara is seeking enthusiastic and qualified students for multiple Student Intern positions. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions across various divisions and departments.
Positions are “at-will” and have limited hours (up to 999 hours in a fiscal year, or 960 for retired CalPERS annuitants).
• Salary Range:
• Student Intern I: $18.20 – $22.00
• Student Intern II: $21.69 – $26.25
• Student Intern III: $23.97 – $29.00
Available Positions & Duties:
Public Works
• Field Services Division – Student Intern II
• Support construction engineering activities.
• Office activities (material submittal processing, meeting minutes, schedule/estimate review/preparation, research, reports, etc.) in support of project management of capital improvement projects during the construction phase.
• Field activities (daily reporting, quantity measurement and accounting, data collection, etc.) in support of construction monitoring and inspection.
• Perform data entry, file organization, communications, document management, etc. in support of division work processes.
• Use technology tools in support of division activities.
• Traffic Division
• Processing Transportation/Minor Encroachment Permits
• Reviewing simple traffic control plans
• Updating the traffic volume map with current traffic data
• Carrying out fieldwork for resident concerns, including measurements, photo logging, and documenting existing field conditions
• Drafting work orders for stripping and street maintenance signs
• Entering data for traffic and engineering studies
• Performing GIS work, including updating bike maps and geocoding planning projects/parking curbs
• Assisting in producing community meeting mailers and supporting public outreach activities
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office software suite and able to use common hand tools
Silicon Valley Power (SVP)
• Resources and Compliance Student Intern II/III
• Learn about renewable energy purchasing, energy trading, resource planning, and legislative/regulatory policy.
• Finance and Administration Student Intern II/III
• Dive into data analytics, financial transactions, and budgetary research.
• Legal Student Intern III
• Assist with legal research and contract review on public law and electric utility issues.
Water and Sewer Utilities
• Compliance Division Student Intern II/III
• Directly support environmental activities.
• Assist in the review of plans and files for regulatory compliance and recycled water.
• Assist with implementing requirements related to stormwater, sanitary sewer, and operating permits.
• Conduct drinking water quality field samples and measurements.
• Assist with developing environmental programs and occupational/environmental safety programs.
• Provide administrative support for compliance programs.
• Engineering Division Student Intern II/III
• Directly support engineering activities.
• Assist in the review of plans and specifications for compliance with City rules and regulations and City engineering standards.
• Conduct field measurements, data collection, and engineering studies.
• Assist with utility design and update record drawings.
• Develop cost estimates, collect, and calculate water system data.
• Provide administrative support for engineering projects including filing and data entry.
Finance
• Accounting – Student Intern II/III
• Gain hands-on accounting and finance experience.
• Work under the supervision of a Senior Management Analyst and/or Principal Accountant.
• Reconcile daily credit card activities.
• Validate data entries.
• Analyze and research financial information.
• Assist team members on ad hoc projects.
• Municipal Services Division – Student Intern II/III
• Gain experience working with Utility Billing and Business Tax Systems and Procedures.
• Assist with utility monthly billing audit preparation
• Update and maintain billing data and enter service orders into the utility billing system
• Assist with intake of Business Tax Affidavits and renewal licenses
• Assist in processing various revenue streams for account receivables
• May assist customers through various communication channels including email and phone inquiries
• Prepares a variety of correspondence and reports related to business tax, billing issues, and adjustments
• Provide administrative support for both Utility and Business Tax programs using the city’s electronic document filing system.
• The intern may also assist with various special projects for both Utility and Business Tax programs
Qualifications:
• Student Intern I: Current enrollment in a high school or an alternative vocational high-school working toward high school equivalency with the minimum completion of the 10th grade.
• Student Intern II: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.
• Student Intern III: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university for completion of a Master’s degree.
• Knowledge and ability to use computers and its related applications.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
• Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
