Job Title: (Student) Dining Services Assistant (student position)
Work Location: Grand Rapids – Lettinga Campus
Department: Dining Services
Target Hiring Range: $12.00-12.50 hourly. Actual pay offered will be commensurate with candidate qualifications and experience, the type of role, pay equity, and available funding.
Summary:
This student position involves working in various aspects of dining services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, food preparation, providing customer service, cleaning, performing cashier duties, and assisting with catering. Specific positions will be assigned based on the employee’s availability and prior work experience. All responsibilities are to be performed ethically and in alignment with the University’s mission, vision, and cultural values.
The role encompasses several potential assignments:
• Dining Hall Front of House: Responsibilities include operating the cash register, collaborating with Dining Hall employees to maintain a clean and organized scramble area, assisting with dining room cleanliness, and performing dishwashing and other food service operations as needed.
• Dining Hall Kitchen Assistant: This role involves general kitchen work alongside cafeteria employees, such as washing dishes, food preparation, stocking supplies, cleaning, and providing support in the scramble and seating areas.
• Panther Den Retail Assistant: This position requires working with Panther Den Staff to take and prepare food orders, operate the cash register, assist with food preparation, stocking, cleaning duties, dishwashing, and general kitchen work.
• HUB Cafe/Concessions Assistant: Duties include working in the coffee shop and concessions stands, taking and preparing food orders, operating the cash register, assisting with food preparation, stocking, cleaning, dishwashing, other kitchen work, and providing event support in concessions as necessary.
Responsibilities:
• Maintain a high level of presentation and enthusiasm for customer service.
• Provide a professional, courteous, and pleasant attitude toward all coworkers, students, and staff.
• Adhere to the Davenport University Code of Conduct.
• Collaborate with Dining Services Supervisors and staff to ensure the best service and quality products for customers.
• Follow all sanitation requirements stipulated by food services and the Kent County Health Department.
• Perform dishwashing and cleaning projects as assigned by supervisors.
• Efficiently operate a cash register and credit card machine when required.
• Perform inventory management duties when needed.
• Engage in food production and preparation.
• Prepare concession food for customers during events.
• Be able to answer customer requests for information.
• Handle documents while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
• Clean areas upon completion of events.
• Post daily menus, both online and in paper format.
• Maintain DU Dining social media pages.
• Record trafficking data in Google spreadsheets.
• Design and print posters and various documents.
• Design and post bulletin boards.
• Brainstorm promotion ideas.
• Help set-up and run dining promotions.
• Provide exceptional customer service, anticipating and exceeding customer needs.
• Demonstrate and promote the University Cultural Values.
• Understand and abide by all external and internal regulations and policies, including NCAA, GLIAC, and national affiliations associated with athletics or other role-specific regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 3 credit hours as a graduate student, while also meeting the standards of academic progress.
• Some food service or coffee shop experience is desired but not required.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Must be able to follow directions.
• Should be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Must have strong customer service skills.
• Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the University’s mission.
• Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems (PC and mainframe).
• Excellent interpersonal skills that transcend diverse audiences, communicating to university customers with positive attitudes toward change, confidentiality, and conflict resolution.
• Must have dependable transportation.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
The role is within a business office/foodservice environment, requiring prolonged sitting and standing. It involves the use of a computer (which may cause eye and hand strain). There are no regular lifting requirements, though occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be necessary.
