Job Description: Student Commons Assistant

The Carruthers Student Commons is a gathering and work space for students, with dedicated work spaces for Alberta School of Business clubs. The part-time staff are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the student commons, including:

• Coordinating space booking and access.
• Ensuring the space is well-maintained and safe.
• Carrying out tidying duties.
• Identifying issues for the building manager.
• Performing opening/closing procedures.
• Supporting visitors with technology.
• Maintaining a welcoming environment.
• Supporting students with information and their activities.
• Maintaining a thorough knowledge of services available for students, including Health and Wellness and advising services.
• Providing on-site support for events happening in the space.

Duties:

• Carry out opening and closing procedures including unlocking the front door and door to the patio space.
• Coordinates the space booking system and trains users how to book space.
• Diffuses visitor-facing situations and identifies when to call for assistance.
• Tidies Student Commons space, including cafe area.
• Ensures the maintenance of cafe including coffee machines, sink, refrigerator, etc.

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in a related field is preferred (i.e. Business, Education or Library and Information Studies or equivalent). In lieu of formal education, work experience in a related field such as event planning; sports and entertainment; marketing and promotions, etc.
• Demonstrated high level of customer service skills.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Efficient/strong computer skills with an ability to learn software programs quickly.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
• Ability to work in a busy area with frequent interruptions.
• Highly motivated, ability to work independently; proactive self-starter.
• Demonstrated ability to problem solve, assess a situation, mitigate risk, apply judgement and adapt & respond accordingly.
• Willingness to learn and develop new skills as needed to support the organization and the role.
• Demonstrated presence, self-confidence, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving ability.
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to health and wellness topics.
• Experience planning and implementing programs or events preferred.
