Job Description: Structural Designer I

GPLA seeks a talented Structural Designer I to collaborate with architects, engineers, modelers, and detailers. The role involves transforming design concepts into detailed structural plans, specifications, and calculation packages using CAD software (like Tekla Structures) and other industry tools. The position demands strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of structural engineering principles.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This is an entry-level position with no direct supervisory responsibilities. The focus is on gaining practical experience and exposure to various aspects of structural design under close guidance from Project Managers and senior team members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assisting in the production of drawings, specifications, and calculations throughout a project’s lifecycle (conceptual design to construction documents). Tasks will be clearly defined and overseen by a Project Manager or Structural Project Engineer.
• Supporting construction administration tasks, such as reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFIs (Requests for Information), and participating in site visits (all under close supervision).
• Assisting in the development of structural designs and analytical models for various building types and materials.
• Reviewing and revising designs based on feedback from senior designers and stakeholders.
• Performing calculations and analyses to ensure structural integrity and code compliance (with support from senior team members).
• Utilizing CAD software (e.g., Tekla Structures) to create 2D drawings and 3D models.
• Collaborating effectively with team members to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality designs within budget.
• Participating in project design meetings to learn about project requirements.
• Engaging in professional development activities to stay updated on industry trends, code changes, and new technologies.
• Identifying opportunities to improve processes, optimize costs, and enhance efficiency.
• Contributing to a shared leadership environment, where all employees are encouraged to lead and follow, taking accountability for their work and contributing to project success.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Basic knowledge of structural engineering principles, codes, and standards.

Education and Experience:

• Minimum Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Structural focus).
• Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification.
• Relevant coursework.
• Previous internship experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit/stand at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods.
• Ability to travel for site visits.
• Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
