Staff Accountant-Intern | BetterLife Insurance
The Tone:
This is a Staff Accountant-Intern internship at BetterLife Insurance, which can be performed 100% remotely. BetterLife provides insurance products as a fraternal benefit society and seeks a motivated Accounting major to gain hands-on experience foundational for an accounting career. This role is crucial for supporting our statutory reporting requirements, offering direct exposure to specialized NAIC accounting principles, financial statement preparation, and invaluable mentorship within the insurance industry’s regulatory framework.

• Mission: Support the statutory close calendar and departmental priorities by assisting with key accounting functions, documentation, and process improvement initiatives.
• Tech Stack: general ledger or ERP systems, Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP), AI tools
What You’ll Actually Do
• Assist with the preparation and posting of journal entries during the statutory monthly and quarterly close cycle.
• Support the preparation of Annual Statement schedules and exhibits, such as investment schedules and exhibits of life insurance/benefits.
• Perform assigned account reconciliations (bank, commission, Securities receivable, Policy), paying close attention to statutory-specific treatment of assets.
• Assist in tracking and organizing data related to premium, benefit, policy loan, and inforce reporting for statutory and reinsurance filings.
• Help maintain supporting workpapers and documentation for financial examinations and external audit requests, coordinating with actuarial and reinsurance data.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Sophomore standing or above preferred. This is an Entry-Level role.
• Experience: Familiarity with general ledger or ERP systems. Prior internship or work experience in accounting is preferred.
• Skills: Proficiency in using AI to aid in being more efficient and accurate, strong Microsoft Excel skills (including formulas and pivot tables), strong attention to detail and organizational skills, and effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Bonus: Interest in pursuing CPA licensure or an insurance industry career path.
