Staff Accountant I | Mercy Housing

The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role at Mercy Housing, located in Denver, CO, requiring one day per week in-office. As a Staff Accountant I, you will play a foundational role in ensuring the accuracy and reasonableness of financial statements and supporting schedules for assigned reporting entities. Your work directly contributes to the organization’s ability to build, preserve, and manage program-enriched housing across the country, fostering a more humane world through financial integrity and clear reporting.

What You’ll Actually Do
Bank Reconciliations: Accurately and timely reconcile bank accounts each month, diligently investigating and resolving any unusual items that remain outstanding.
Transaction Analysis & Reconciliation: Conduct thorough research on historical accounting transactions and meticulously reconcile any differences found between Accounts Payable (A/P), Accounts Receivable (A/R) modules, and the General Ledger (G/L) module.
Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare periodic financial statements as directed by the Accounting Manager, ensuring they meet assigned time limits and accuracy standards.
Financial Narrative & Reporting: Create clear, relevant, and current explanations for all financial statements in a narrative format for users, and prepare other required financial statement-related reports.
Audit & External Compliance Support: Assist in the preparation of budgets and schedules necessary for the annual audit process, and perform specific reporting required by various outside agencies.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. This is an entry-level position foundational to the accounting department.
• Experience: 1-2 years of accounting experience.
• Skills: Demonstrate proficiency in spreadsheet applications and computerized accounting systems, coupled with a strong willingness to learn and seek advice from colleagues and management. Possess the ability to understand and effectively implement directives, apply self-initiative to problem-solve and prioritize workload efficiently, and communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written forms.
• Bonus: Bachelor’s degree specifically in accounting, and prior experience in either public or industry accounting.
