As a Sr. Underwriter for Workers’ Compensation, you will apply technical expertise to evaluate submissions, balancing risk exposure, coverage needs, and profitability, directly contributing to the division’s success.

• Mission: Lead and collaborate with a team to evaluate operational risks, safety programs, and claim trends to drive profitability in the workers’ compensation portfolio.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Underwriting: Underwrite complex insurance risks within granted levels of authority by identifying and analyzing risk exposures, loss frequency, and severity against desired coverage to ensure submissions meet underwriting standards and are profitable.
• Portfolio Management: Curate a portfolio of business in accordance with Underwriting Guidelines and prescribed pricing tools, utilizing discretion in managing the portfolio, and identifying changes in account/market risk exposures and loss trends to maximize profitability.
• Broker Relationships: Foster and expand relationships with key producers by traveling to connect and attend events/meetings as needed, and negotiate with them within delegated authority to achieve profit objectives.
• Team Leadership: Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to other underwriters and associate underwriters on the team and within the company, potentially formally managing 1-2 direct reports.
• Market Analysis & Development: Keep up to date on market dynamics, the competitive landscape, and product differences, communicating market intelligence to the broader group, and assisting on specialty projects such as testing rating models and new systems.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Senior level professional with a Bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, business, or a related field preferred; possesses an in-depth understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk assessment in the workers’ compensation line of business.
• Experience: 5-8 years of relevant underwriting experience; demonstrated ability to handle complex risks with sound judgment; proven ability to manage and build strong broker and client relationships.
• Skills: Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills to effectively evaluate insurance submissions and achieve profit objectives; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); highly self-motivated with strong attention to detail.
• Bonus: Professional certifications such as CPCU, AU, or similar designations preferred.
