Job Description
Job Title: Sports Journalism Intern (Remote) [Fall 2025]
Overview:
This is a highly selective, unpaid, and supervised remote internship position for Fall 2025, offered by WKRG-TV News 5, based in Mobile, AL. Only one (1) Sports Journalism Intern will be selected from each participating college campus. The internship is based at the student’s home campus. Students who must earn academic credit for the internship will receive priority consideration.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
• Participate in the production of a live, daily, nationally-syndicated sports talk television show, “Southeast Sports+”.
• Assist with booking guests, gathering information, and creating content.
• Provide assistance to the producer and hosts as needed.
• Students with highly exceptional communication skills and presentation confidence may be occasionally selected to present material on-camera.
Learning & Experience:
Interns will gain significant experience through observation and hands-on work. The program aims to:
• Broaden understanding of writing for sports/news websites.
• Boost sports and news journalism skills.
• Strengthen social media skills relevant to sports journalism.
• Provide insights into the media industry and employment opportunities.
• Improve craft and presentation skills applicable to future careers.

Qualifications & Requirements:
• Majors Encouraged: Students majoring in Sports Journalism (especially encouraged if from Southeastern Conference (SEC) member universities), News Journalism, Social Media Content & Management, Communication Arts, Digital Marketing, or similar fields.
• Academic Credit: Priority consideration given to students who must earn academic credit. Interns are responsible for obtaining and completing any necessary forms for credit. The college/university academic advisor determines credit amount and weekly availability.
• Technical Access: The intern is responsible for securing access to a computer and the internet to communicate and complete assignments.
• Key Qualities:
• VERY STRONG WRITING SKILLS (both digital and script-writing).
• HIGHLY ORGANIZED.
• HIGHLY SELF-MOTIVATED.
• ZERO CALL RELUCTANCE and/or APPROACH ANXIETY.
• Required Prior Knowledge/Skills (Arrive with):
• Writing: Basic working understanding of AP style & standards for text articles and broadcast scripts.
• Meeting Deadlines: Prepared to participate nimbly and with flexibility in a fast-paced environment where assignments often change.
• Video Editing: Knowledge of a timeline-based software editing program like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
• Video Acquisition: Ability to capture video, natural sound, and interviews on a phone or camera.
