Accountant – Sponsored Projects Accounting | Mount Sinai Health System

This is an Accountant role at Mount Sinai Health System, located in New York, NY. What You’ll Actually Do
• Grant Portfolio Oversight and Transaction Compliance: Systematically review the entire grants and contracts portfolio, performing detailed reviews and approvals of all associated financial transactions to ensure strict adherence to both sponsor and institutional policies, regulations, and the specific terms and conditions of each award.
• Financial Data Integrity and Analysis: Actively collect and analyze comprehensive financial data, including comparing salary and effort charged to grants against approved award budgets, to proactively detect any potential non-compliance with governing laws, regulations, or management policies, and to guarantee data integrity.
• Accounting Records Examination and Reconciliation: Thoroughly inspect account books to verify accuracy and confirm the proper application of accepted accounting procedures for recording expenditures, reviewing accounts for discrepancies, inspecting cash on hand, confirming payment schedules, and actively reconciling any identified differences, including following up on outstanding receivables.
• Financial Reporting and Projections: Prepare, examine, and analyze a wide range of accounting records, financial transactions, and reports, assessing their accuracy, completeness, and conformance to award terms and reporting standards. This includes preparing adjusting journal entries and conducting budget analyses of costs, revenues, and obligations to project the accurate financial status of grant accounts.
• Stakeholder Communication and Cost Allocation: Generate annual, periodic, and other required financial reports, including variance analyses comparing budgeted to actual costs. Communicate these financial insights and compliance statuses to management, department administrators, and principal investigators, while also ensuring that cost allocations between closely related grants follow approved, reasonable methodologies.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• Experience: 0–1 year of accounting experience; 1 year of Accounting/Auditing experience is desired.
• Skills: Proficiency in accepted accounting procedures, financial transaction review, detailed data analysis, comprehensive financial reporting preparation, and robust compliance assessment.
