Sourcing Engineer II – Component | Microsoft

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Microsoft, located in various in-person locations across the U.S., including the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area. Microsoft Devices Operations (MDO) group launches innovative consumer electronics products, and this role plays a significant part in guiding cross-functional teams through complex sourcing activities. The Sourcing Engineer II develops and executes market-leading strategies, directly impacting the successful delivery of Microsoft’s hardware. This position offers a chance to guide teams, manage supplier relationships, and contribute to the successful launch of products.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Sourcing Strategy: Develop and execute market-leading sourcing strategies for assigned component categories, utilizing full market knowledge and total cost of ownership (TCO) modeling.
• Component Acquisition: Secure necessary components and services within the assigned category to support Microsoft’s technology and cost objectives through effective sourcing.
• Cost Estimation: Deliver accurate, data-driven cost estimates and projections, validated through critical review and alternative analyses.
• Supplier Management: Act as the business owner for category and component supplier relationships, managing and negotiating contractual agreements.
• Performance Improvement: Drive change management initiatives to continuously improve efficiency and performance via repeatable processes and people growth.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Mid-level professional with a Master’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Experience: 1+ year in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales roles with a Master’s degree, or 2+ years with a Bachelor’s degree. Proven track record in dynamic environments, with experience managing supplier relationships and overseeing Product Supply Agreement negotiations.
• Skills: Full market knowledge for assigned component categories; Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) cost modeling; Transparent supplier relationship management; Contractual agreement negotiation and execution; Quantitative and qualitative assessment skills for resource maximization.
• Bonus: Deep industry knowledge relevant to engineering or manufacturing for consumer electronics hardware; Demonstrated experience in market analysis to formulate sourcing strategies; Expertise in financial statement analysis for should-cost models; Combination of business and technical knowledge for assigned categories; Project/timeline adherence experience, particularly in Consumer Electronics Integrated Project Management; Ability to articulate points of view with executive management and synthesize diverse perspectives.
