Software Engineer Intern – Air Taxi | Joby Aviation

The Tone:
This is an internship at Joby Aviation, located in San Carlos, CA. Joby Aviation is working to make piloted air taxis a reality, developing aircraft that take off vertically and transport passengers over congested city streets. This role is crucial for building the software that enables quiet, emissions-free flight and brings Joby’s air taxi service to the world. You will contribute directly to the technology stack that powers this advanced aerial mobility solution.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop: Assist in the development and implementation of features across full-stack systems, including backend services and internal tools.
• Collaborate: Work with Product, Design, and Flight Operations teams to help define requirements and deliver mobile solutions.
• Design: Assist in designing and implementing data flows to ensure seamless application functionality.
• Interact: Contribute to client/server interactions and occasionally assist with backend APIs.
• Integrate: Help implement and integrate AI/ML models into operational software and data pipelines.
• Participate: Engage in team software processes such as requirement and test plan generation, design doc creation, code reviews, and deployments.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a BS/MS in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Experience: Basic knowledge of a modern programming language (e.g., Python, Go, Java) and familiarity with foundational concepts in data structures, algorithms, and software engineering.
• Skills: Foundational understanding of system design concepts, including client/server interactions.
• Bonus: Experience with a backend language like Java, Go, or Python; previous experience in aviation, transportation logistics, or regulated industries; experience in high-growth, startup-like environments; or basic exposure to machine learning, data science, or AI applications.
