Job Title: Software Engineer Intern

Who We Are: About Stripe

Stripe is a leading financial infrastructure platform dedicated to powering businesses worldwide. Millions of companies, ranging from vast global enterprises to ambitious startups, leverage Stripe to facilitate payment processing, drive revenue growth, and unlock new business opportunities. Our ambitious mission is to significantly increase the GDP of the internet, and we recognize the monumental work ahead. This presents an unparalleled opportunity for you to contribute to making the global economy accessible to everyone, all while engaging in some of the most impactful work of your career.

About The Team & Internship Program

Our comprehensive internship program offers an exceptional opportunity to work on highly impactful products that directly contribute to our mission of growing the internet’s GDP. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience with diverse systems and cutting-edge technologies, deepen your understanding of systems design and testing methodologies, and have numerous opportunities to present your work to both your immediate team and the broader organization. Each intern is supported by a dedicated intern manager, and every project you undertake is an integral part of the team’s roadmap, directly contributing to Stripe’s core mission.

What You’ll Do & Responsibilities

Every internship at Stripe revolves around a real, legitimate project that addresses urgent customer needs and touches various parts of our operations and technology stack. We are committed to supporting you in bringing your project to fruition – you will indeed ship it to production.

Recent intern projects have included:

  • Rebuilding our statistics aggregation service.
  • Developing new service discovery systems.
  • Implementing user-facing improvements, such as enhancing the clarity of error messages on Stripe Checkout.

As a Stripe intern, you will be:

  • Writing production-ready software that will have a meaningful impact on Stripe and its users.
  • Actively participating in technical feedback loops through rigorous code reviews and engaging design discussions.
  • Collaborating effectively with other engineers and various cross-functional stakeholders, proactively seeking and incorporating feedback to refine your work.
  • Demonstrating a strong capacity for rapid learning by asking insightful questions, working efficiently with your intern manager and teammates, and clearly communicating the status and progress of your work.

You’ll be tackling important projects designed to increase global commerce, while working alongside exceptional individuals who embody high standards and inspire others to achieve more and go further. We deeply value both technical and personal growth, viewing our internship program as a primary vehicle for fostering both.

Who You Are (Qualifications)

We encourage you to apply if you meet the minimum requirements. Preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a strict requirement.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess a strong fundamental understanding of computer science, typically gained through the pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrate some experience and familiarity with programming, acquired either through impactful side projects or relevant coursework. While we primarily use Java, Ruby, JavaScript, Scala, and Go, we believe that new programming languages can be quickly learned if foundational knowledge and general computing principles are solid.
  • Show evidence of experience from previous internships or other multi-person projects (including open-source contributions) that highlight your ability to both evaluate and effectively receive feedback from mentors, peers, and stakeholders.
  • Exhibit the ability to quickly learn unfamiliar systems and develop a deep understanding of them through independent research and collaborative work with a mentor and subject matter experts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed at least 2 years of university education, or possess equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrate one or more areas of specialized knowledge balanced with general skills and knowledge. For example, having expertise in frontend technologies while also understanding, at a high level, how a service handles an HTTP request.
  • Possess an understanding of and some experience in writing high-quality pull requests, including robust test coverage, and the working knowledge necessary to complete projects with minimal defects.
  • Familiarity with navigating and managing your work within new code bases, potentially involving multiple programming languages.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to explain your work to various stakeholders, team members, and other colleagues across Stripe.

In-Office Expectations

Stripe employees assigned to an office in most locations are currently expected to spend at least 50% of their time in a given month in their local office or with users. This expectation may vary based on specific role, team, and location. For example, employees at our Bucharest, Romania site have an 80% in-office expectation, while those in Stripe Delivery Center roles in Mexico City, Mexico, and Bengaluru, India work 100% from the office. Additionally, some teams may have greater in-office attendance requirements to appropriately support our users and workflows; these will be discussed by the hiring manager. This hybrid approach aims to balance the benefits of in-person collaboration and learning with supporting flexibility where possible.

Pay and Benefits

The annual US base salary range for this role is $123,500 – $123,500. For sales roles, the range provided represents the role’s On Target Earnings (“OTE”) range, which includes both the sales commissions/bonuses target and the annual base salary. This salary range may encompass several career levels at Stripe and will be further refined during the interview process based on factors such as the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range specific to their location during the interview process.

  • Equity
