Job Description, Detailed

This is an Intern Apex level position for a Software Engineer Intern within HII’s Mission Technologies Division, specifically supporting the Principal AI/ML Engineer. This is a Fall 2025 internship opportunity.

Primary Goal and Responsibilities:
The core objective of this role is to advance space simulation and support AI development for the United States Space Force (USSF) customer. The intern will be an integral part of a cross-functional team including AI engineers, modeling and simulation engineers, product owners, and program managers. The primary responsibility involves supporting the development of artificial intelligence models that are critical to a larger pipeline, delivering significant value to the end customer. The work will heavily focus on developing advanced AI to support space superiority analytics, as well as multi-domain, joint service, and operations needs. These simulations are designed to support critical functions such as force structure planning, Joint Combatant Command analysis and operations support, Space Force testing and training, and research and development of space systems.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
As a software engineer intern, key tasks will include:
Building software from source for different platforms using various compilers.
Developing acceptance, integration, and unit tests for a variety of technologies.
Developing new capabilities by leveraging existing libraries.
Participating in software design meetings.
Participating in code reviews.
Performing issue backlog and board maintenance.
Providing execution plan and status report inputs.
Writing user and developer documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be working towards a Master’s degree with more than 50% of required credits completed for their degree. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate:
• A strong interest in Space Operations.
Solid Technical Writing Skills.
• A willingness to tackle difficult problems.
• A willingness to learn new languages (e.g., AFscript).

Preferred Requirements:
Ideal candidates will have:
• Knowledgeable in agent-based, event-driven simulators.
• Knowledge in at least one scripting language.
• Familiarity with tools such as Git, GitLab, JFrog Artifactory, Jira, and Confluence.
• A willingness to learn and provide insight into AFSIM (Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling), which is a C++ based modular object-oriented, multi-domain, multi-resolution modeling and simulation (M&S) framework for military simulations.
• Prior internship or work experience within the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Required Travel: Minimal, 0 – 10%.
Employment Type: Part Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt.
Anticipated Salary Range: $55,299.00 – $55,299.00 (indicates a specific rate or annual equivalent for part-time work).
Security Clearance: Ability to Obtain (meaning the candidate must be eligible to obtain a security clearance).
