About the Job

This is a developmental opportunity specifically designed for active-duty military personnel who are preparing to separate from the military within the next 3-6 months. It is part of the Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge program. This program helps military members transition to civilian careers by matching their training and experience with civilian job opportunities. The internship provides on-the-job training and experience in the civilian sector to SkillBridge applicants.

Job Description

As a SkillBridge Intern, you will:

• Engage in various work assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity, structured so the participant has an opportunity to apply principles and theories, explore a career path and gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform at a professional level (as typically identified by an existing classification within Spokane County).
• Receive training, supervision, and mentorship from a professional in their field.
• Take part in professional development opportunities via conferences, seminars, online events, and other means.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide entry- to intermediate-level professional services, under the supervision of professional staff and/or a supervisor, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the unit.
• Undertake and/or participate in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the organization.
• Participate in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within the area of expertise.
• Interact directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
• Receive guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
• Conduct original research and prepare reports based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action (as appropriate to the position and as specified by unit management).
• Undertake related studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be eligible for the DOD SkillBridge program.
• No previous work experience is required.
• Must successfully pass a criminal background check.

• Increase knowledge of specific areas of assignment.

Abilities:

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of all ages from a variety of cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds, in a wide variety of situations.
• Gather, organize, analyze, and present information and data from a variety of sources.
• Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Understand and apply concepts applicable to the area of assignment.
• Work both independently and/or in a team environment.
• Exercise effective time management and handle multiple priorities at one time.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with elected officials, department heads, co-workers, the general public, and other persons specific to the area of assignment.
• Utilize various work-related computer technology and software applications.
