Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) Intern/Co-op
As a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) Intern/Co-op, you’ll work on projects spanning server hardware, operating systems, code deployment tools, and service monitoring. You’ll have the opportunity to build software and systems to monitor, scale, and deploy Meraki’s distributed cloud services.
Meraki’s SRE organization is crucial in building and scaling the cloud that supports millions of Meraki devices worldwide.
Meraki’s customer base has grown rapidly, serving over 10 billion requests per day across their data centers globally. Their customers rely on the Meraki cloud for critical infrastructure management, including network switches, security appliances, wireless APs, security cameras, and IoT devices.
In this role, you will:
• Be part of a tight-knit engineering team with colleagues around the world.
• Make pivotal decisions about managing and scaling sophisticated, high-performance distributed systems.
• Provide your perspective on cloud services and develop innovative ways to improve infrastructure management.
What we look for in our SRE intern/co-op candidates:
• Education:
• Pursuing a technical bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with a solid foundation in computer science fundamentals.
• OR pursuing a software/coding boot camp (or educational training program) and/or technical associate’s degree with a solid base in computer science fundamentals (completed within the last 6 months).
• Communication: Clear and effective communication skills.
• Learning: Proactive learners who can quickly adapt to various frameworks, languages, and environments.
• Teamwork: Passionate team players.
• Feedback: Continuously learn from experience and welcome feedback.
• Experience: Previous internship or large-scale project experience.
• Technical Skills: Familiarity with networking, data visualization, distributed systems, databases, container orchestration, or Ruby on Rails.
• Authorization: Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
Bonus points if you:
• Have experience with *nix systems (Debian and Ubuntu).
• Have worked with container technologies (Docker Swarm and Kubernetes).
• Are familiar with logging and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Logstash, ElasticSearch, OpenTelemetry, statsd, collectd).
• Have experience with CI/CD tooling (Jenkins or Gitlab).
Projects and Work Life:
• Program Length: Meraki interns and co-ops join for 12 and 16-week programs, respectively.
• Direct Placement: Interns/co-ops are placed directly onto subteams.
• Project Progression:
• Start with a small starter project (e.g., integration and implementation of new tools).
• Move on to a larger project (e.g., building infrastructure for a new service).
• Multi-functional Projects: Provide exposure to new languages and technologies, encourage professional growth, and foster a sense of ownership within the team.
• Mentorship: Each intern/co-op is paired with a mentor for continual feedback and guidance.
• Mentor Support: Mentors facilitate introductions, provide tool and process overviews, and ensure a smooth integration into Meraki life.
Examples of Recent Intern Projects:
• Improving Kubernetes node lifecycle management.
• Hardening internal microservice containers to enhance security and resiliency.
• Building a framework for Airflow unit tests.
