Opportunity Summary:

This internship opportunity is designed for senior nursing students to fulfill their clinical hour requirements for graduation at Sheppard Pratt’s inpatient units. Interns will work directly on assigned inpatient units under the guidance of a pre-selected BSN-prepared preceptor. The primary focus of this internship is to develop a comprehensive understanding of psychiatric nursing. This includes, but is not limited to:

Therapeutic Communication
Therapeutic Groups
Common Psychiatric Medications
Verbal De-escalation Techniques
Patient Engagement
Milieu Management

Opportunity Time Frame:

The practicum is semester-based. Exact hours and dates will vary depending on the specific requirements of the student’s nursing program.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be a senior-level nursing student in the final semester of their nursing program.
• Must complete an in-person onboarding process through Human Resources at Sheppard Pratt.
• Sheppard Pratt must have a current affiliation agreement with the student’s nursing school.
• Student must submit a current transcript with their application.
• A program description that includes practicum hours and student expectations must be provided.

Learning Model:

The student will work directly with an assigned preceptor, who will provide 1:1 supervision. The preceptor will select opportunities for:

Observation
Return Demonstration
Verbal Comprehension

Student Expectations:

Students participating in this internship should expect to be involved in:

Direct patient interaction/care
Assisting in running a group
Learning team collaboration
Receiving 1:1 feedback from their preceptor

Student Tasks:

Interns will perform all tasks typically associated with a psychiatric nurse, with the following exceptions:

Medication Administration
Hands-on Interventions for Behavioral Dyscontrol
