Position Overview

This Safety Internship emphasizes the paramount importance of safety for all personnel involved in Kiewit’s construction projects across North America, aligning with the company’s “nobody gets hurt” mission. As a Safety Intern, you will gain hands-on, real-world learning experience, focusing on fulfilling this critical mission. The role involves learning essential skills, understanding safety programs, regulations, and guidelines that underpin Kiewit’s safety culture. This internship offers the opportunity to develop, participate, and learn key roles and functions within construction management while actively supporting field teams. It’s an opportunity to contribute to significant projects that build and connect communities, with a strong focus on ensuring all work is done safely and correctly from the outset.

Location

Kiewit’s culture involves relocating teams based on project availability, combined with individual development plans, skill sets, and career goals. This means your Kiewit adventure is custom-designed. As a Safety Intern, you will be assigned to one of Kiewit’s many project or office sites for the duration of your internship, which may require travel and/or relocation.

Responsibilities

As a Safety Intern, your responsibilities will include:
• Being part of a team responsible for implementing and overseeing the Project Safety Program.
• Assisting in the development of site safety policies and procedures.
• Monitoring various construction project activities to ensure compliance with pertinent government regulations (federal, state/provincial), client requirements, and company policies and procedures.
Establishing and monitoring safe working conditions for all personnel.
Providing corrective action recommendations and assisting in implementing metrics for tracking and reporting on performance issues when necessary.
Reviewing project work plans for accuracy and conformance with all safety standards.
• Assisting in safety program audits, coaching, and regular onsite training.
• Carrying out duties in varying work environments, including wide-ranging weather conditions and terrain.
• Possessing the ability to travel and/or relocate as required for projects.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• Must be pursuing a degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field of study.
Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
Strong work ethic – willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
Ability to work with all levels in the organization, from craft to leadership.
• The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.
• The ability to travel and relocate as required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of construction safety, current Federal and OSHA requirements.
Certification as a Safety Professional or Emergency Medical Technician.

• May work at various different locations and conditions may vary.

Compensation

The base compensation for this position is $18.00/hr – $22.00/hr.
