Job Description

This is a Safety Internship with Mass Electric Construction, focusing on the critical importance of safety in construction projects across North America. The core mission, “nobody gets hurt,” is deeply ingrained in the company’s culture.

As a Safety Intern, you will gain hands-on, real-world learning experience, helping to fulfill this safety mission. You will learn the essential skills, programs, regulations, and guidelines that ensure personnel return home safely each day. The internship provides an opportunity to develop, participate in, and learn key roles and functions within construction management, while supporting field teams.

Key aspects of the role include:
• Being part of a team responsible for implementing and overseeing the Project Safety Program, which includes developing site safety policies and procedures.
• Assisting in monitoring various construction project activities to ensure compliance with pertinent government regulations (Federal and OSHA requirements preferred), state/provincial laws, client standards, and company policies and procedures.
• Helping to establish and monitor safe working conditions for employees, who are considered the company’s most valuable assets.
• Providing corrective action recommendations and assisting in implementing metrics for tracking and reporting on performance issues when necessary.
• Reviewing project work plans for accuracy and conformance with all safety standards.
• Assisting in safety program audits, coaching, and regular onsite training.

The position requires the ability to carry out duties in varying work environments, including wide-ranging weather conditions and diverse terrain. The intern must also have the ability to travel and/or relocate as required for projects, as assignments will be to one of the many project or office sites for the duration of the internship.

Candidates should be pursuing a degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of construction safety and current Federal/OSHA requirements, working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, strong organizational and time management skills, excellent written and verbal communication, good attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization. The ability to work independently as well as part of a team is crucial. Certification as a Safety Professional or Emergency Medical Technician is preferred. The intern must be able to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.

Other essential requirements include regular, reliable attendance; working productively and meeting deadlines; effective and professional communication; performing work safely and effectively; understanding and following instructions; and the ability to work during normal operating hours, including overtime and weekends as required.
