Job Description: Research Internship
Responsibilities:
• Project Development: Collaborate with a mentor to define and execute a research project aligned with the intern’s interests and Tableau’s future product roadmap.
• Research Exploration: Explore industry research, gain insights into product development, and potentially publish work at top academic conferences.
• Mentorship and Collaboration: Work closely with a mentor from Tableau Research, meeting daily to plan, coordinate, and receive guidance. Present project updates at team meetings.
• Research Execution: Design and/or prototype solutions, conduct user studies, collect and analyze data, and create a final presentation and write-up of the project.
• Potential for Publication: Contribute to the co-authoring of an academic paper, potentially extending beyond the internship period.

Qualifications:
• Alignment with Mission: Passion for research that aligns with Tableau’s mission to help people see and understand data.
• Academic Background: PhD student in good academic standing with at least 2 years of research and publishing experience at high-quality conferences and journals (e.g., VIS, EuroVis, IUI, CHI, CSCW, UIST, IUI, AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS).
• Technical Skills:
• Prototyping: Proficiency in languages like D3/JavaScript, Python, R, C++, C#, Java, Go if the project involves prototyping.
• User Studies: Strong experience with designing and conducting user studies, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
• Statistics: Strong computational skills and experience in statistical modeling, including data wrangling, model validation, and uncertainty assessment.
• UX/UI: Portfolio of UX/interaction/visualization design examples if the project involves prototyping user interfaces.
• Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Executive Skills: Diligent, takes personal responsibility, manages time effectively, balances independent work with meeting deadlines, prioritizes tasks efficiently, delivers high-quality results on time.
Previous internship experience is a plus but not required.
