About the Job: Standards & Mobility Innovation Lab
The Standards & Mobility Innovation (SMI) team at Samsung Research America is at the forefront of developing groundbreaking technologies. Our mission is to enable ubiquitous access to information and deliver immersive multimedia experiences for mobility users. Our core research areas include:
- Wireless Standards & Technology: Pioneering advancements in 5G/6G, Wi-Fi, FiRa/UWB, MPEG, AOM, CSA Matter, CSA ACWG, CCC, and more.
- RF & Fast Prototyping: Rapid development and testing of 5G and IEEE 802 wireless systems and their diverse use cases.
- Multimedia Standards & Technology: Innovating in areas such as Virtual Reality (VR), High Dynamic Range (HDR), and All-IP delivery solutions.
- IoT Standards & Smart Home: Developing connectivity and sensing technologies for Smart Home ecosystems.
Position Summary: Research Intern/Associate, Wireless Communication & Sensing
Join the SMI lab and contribute directly to shaping Samsung’s vision for the next generation of wireless communication and sensing technology. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge research that will impact future mobile and smart home products.
Position Responsibilities:
- Perform cutting-edge research for next-generation wireless connectivity and/or sensing solutions and systems, with a specific focus on applications for mobile and smart home products.
- Translate conceptual ideas into concrete technical requirements and detailed specifications for new features and functionalities.
- Design, implement, and rigorously verify algorithms through simulations or physical prototyping, ensuring they meet defined technical requirements and specifications.
- Collaborate effectively within cross-functional and cross-divisional teams, actively assisting in the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of projects from initial concept through to successful completion.
Required Skills:
- Education: Currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering (EE), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a closely related relevant field.
- Wireless Communication Expertise: A solid background in fundamental wireless communication areas, including modulation, channel coding, digital signal processing, wireless communication systems design, filter theory, FFTs, synchronization, detection, equalization, MIMO, and semantic communication.
- Wireless Standards Familiarity (Preferred): Familiarity with established wireless connectivity standards such as Wi-Fi.
- Network Analysis & Security (Preferred): Familiarity with network traffic analysis and network security concepts.
- Sensing Technologies: A strong background in sensing technologies and solution development, e.g., radar, LiDAR, acoustic sensing, wireless Channel State Information (CSI) sensing, Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyogram (EMG), Electrooculogram (EOG).
- Programming & Machine Learning: Excellent working knowledge of Python and its machine learning modules, including Scikit-learn, Keras, Tensorflow, Keras-RL, PyTorch, and Pandas libraries.
- ML Implementation: Proven experience implementing machine learning algorithms to solve challenging problems, particularly in wireless connectivity and/or sensing system design.
- Simulation Skills: Demonstrated skills in the simulation of cellular network or connectivity technologies to derive tradeoffs and predict performance under diverse channel conditions.
- System/Link-Level Simulation: Hands-on experience with system or link-level simulations.
- Requirements Definition: Ability to clearly define high-level requirements and evaluation criteria for air interface technology alternatives.
- Communication: Excellent verbal communication and writing skills to effectively represent derived results and technical concepts developed during the course of work.
Compensation & Benefits:
Our total rewards programs are designed to motivate and engage exceptional talent. The hourly pay rate range for roles at this level is listed below, but may vary in other states due to geographic labor market differentials. Within this range, individual rates are determined by factors such as the role’s function, location, and the individual’s knowledge, skills, experience, education, and training. This compensation is part of a comprehensive package, which includes annual bonus eligibility and generous benefits to support your well-being.
Hourly Pay Rate Range: $44—$59 USD
