Job Description: Research Intern – Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL)

GTRI’s Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) focuses on applied research, development, testing, and evaluation of ground-based air and missile defense systems, as well as rotary-wing aviation systems. ASL is currently seeking interns to join their team in Huntsville, AL.

The selected intern will:

• Create visual solutions and outcomes for research, technical data, and complex procedures using a wide range of graphic software, HTML/CSS, and other interactive technologies.
• Support a variety of defense programs with these visual assets.

This is a research intern role in the Capability Centric Architecture Branch (CCAB) within the Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL).

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Human Systems Engineering, Human Factors, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
• Full-Time Intern: Must be registered for Full-time Internship Credit.
• Part-Time Intern: Must be registered for 6+ credit hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge or experience in computer graphics.
• Knowledge or experience in user interface design, human factors design, etc.
• Ability to create 3D models from 2D photos, CAD, and other documents using software like Autodesk 3D Studio Max or Maya.
• Willingness to learn 3D creation packages like Remo3D and work with OpenFlight and glTF formatted models.
• Experience working with images as textures (e.g., liveries on vehicles) using tools like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or similar.
• Ability to create visual images for presentations, large format posters, and/or printouts.
• Ability to integrate content assets into modeling and simulation programs.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly communicate and understand technical ideas.

Hours per Week: 10-20 hours per week.

U.S. Persons Requirements: Due to research contracts with the US federal government, candidates must be US Persons.
