Job Description:
Research Internships at Microsoft Research New England: These internships offer a dynamic environment for aspiring research careers. Interns work alongside leading researchers, applied scientists, and engineers to push the boundaries of machine learning and statistics.
Responsibilities: Interns will actively participate in research, putting inquiry and theory into practice. They’ll collaborate with doctoral candidates and experienced researchers, contributing to research and development projects. Specific tasks during the 12-week internship include:
• Working with a mentor.
• Collaborating with other interns and researchers.
• Presenting research findings.
• Contributing to the research community.
Project Areas: Research projects encompass a wide range of topics within applied and theoretical machine learning and statistics, including (but not limited to):
• Generative models
• Transfer learning
• Domain adaptation
• Stochastic control
• Meta-learning
• Sign language modeling
• Approximate inference
• Distribution compression
• Weather and climate forecasting
• Causal inference
• Causal machine learning
• ML for health
• Adversarial ML
• Learning and incentives
• Reinforcement learning

• Unsupervised learning
Qualifications:
• Required: Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field. Physical presence at the Microsoft worksite in New England is required for the internship duration. Two reference letters, a cover letter, and relevant work/research samples are also needed.
• Preferred: Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas; effective collaboration with researchers and product development teams; proficient interpersonal and cross-cultural collaboration skills.
Compensation:** The base pay range is USD $6,550 – $12,880 per month, with a higher range (USD $8,480 – $13,920 per month) applicable to specific locations within the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan areas.
