Job Description

This role, titled Registered Nurse Residency-Nursing Internship, is a full-time position primarily focused on providing comprehensive nursing care within a nursing internship/residency framework.

Overall Purpose:
The Registered Nurse Residency participant is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care through assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. This role focuses on a diverse patient population, including older adolescents, young adults, adults, geriatric, and pediatric patients. It also involves supervision and collaboration with other clinical and clerical staff to ensure quality care.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

Patient Care Planning:
• Develops comprehensive nursing care plans addressing all significant patient needs and problems identified through nursing assessment.
• Prepares nursing elements for the interdisciplinary care plan before the initial team conference.
• Regularly reviews and updates the nursing care plan, collaborating with team members as patient conditions change.

Patient Care Provision:
Implements patient care as outlined in both the nursing and interdisciplinary care plans.
Sets priorities based on patient acuity and needs.
• Provides safe and therapeutic care, seeking additional resources when necessary.
Safely performs and accurately documents procedures in accordance with established nursing policies.

Patient Care Evaluation:
Evaluates patient response to interventions and their progress toward goals in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Evaluates progress toward nursing goals and revises them weekly as needed.
• Completes nursing progress notes for assigned patients daily.
• Fills out nursing flow sheets for assigned patients daily.

Teaching:
Evaluates educational needs of patients and their significant others, documenting their response to teaching.
Utilizes, adapts, and revises teaching resources to meet diverse patient education needs.
Explains procedures, tests, and disease processes to patients and families as required.
• Acts as a role model for healthcare students and other team members.
• Serves as a preceptor for assigned orientees, assisting in the orientation of new staff by sharing knowledge and experience.

Patient Care Communication:
Reports and documents accurately and concisely the patient’s condition to appropriate persons.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
• Applies basic verbal and nonverbal skills to foster open, effective communication among care team members, patients, and significant others.
• Encourages direct discussion to resolve differences among staff members and seeks assistance when arbitration is needed.
• Gives and accepts constructive feedback appropriately.
• Identifies actual or potentially unsafe patient care practices, reports them using designated procedures, and suggests alternatives.

Supervision and Collaboration:
This role involves providing direction and supervision to LVN/LPNs, nursing assistants, unit secretaries, and other clinical/clerical associates. Participants may also function as a charge nurse for the unit when assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
Experience: Requires six months to a year of experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or as a holder of an active Graduate Nurse (GN) permit.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
BLS (Basic Life Support) is required.
RN License in the state of employment or a compact state is required.
• A Graduate Nurse Permit is also accepted for entry into the program.
• *Note: Associates with an unsuccessful licensure application or on the 75th day following the effective date of the temporary permit will be transferred to another position within CHRISTUS Health.•
