Program Description

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, is actively seeking talented leaders to enhance its global leadership depth and contribute to the organization’s current and future success. The co-op/intern Program offers students practical work experience in a variety of diverse technical and manufacturing areas.

In addition to challenging, engaging, and interesting work assignments, students will have opportunities to meet and interact with peers from other universities both at work and in social settings. Tours of Goodyear facilities are arranged to provide students with a deeper understanding of the business. Goodyear leaders also engage with students to encourage critical thinking about significant business issues and career options.

Function Overview and Project Task/Responsibilities

The Quality team is looking for talented future leaders to help drive continuous quality improvements in our manufacturing plants. The Quality co-op/intern program is designed to develop these leaders by offering a fast-paced, hands-on, and varied learning experience. The program provides the opportunity for up to five terms, with rotations across multiple locations, including the Global Headquarters and various North American plants. Students will gain experience working across the entire tire manufacturing process.

Students will engage in projects involving:

  • Raw materials
  • Rubber compounds
  • Component preparation
  • Tire building
  • Curing
  • Final finish
  • New product industrialization

These projects necessitate collaboration with various other Goodyear functions, including our Operations and Global Engineering teams. The Quality co-op/intern program offers engineering and science students unique and valuable practical experience essential for understanding the quality and manufacturing engineering roles available at Goodyear. This program has a proven track record of building a strong pipeline of candidates for future permanent positions within our manufacturing plant quality teams.

Examples of Project Work Include

  • Tracking plant performance and identifying and implementing solutions for improvement.
  • Collaborating on the updates and creation of specifications and procedures.
  • Learning the basics of rubber compounding in a corporate and manufacturing environment.
  • Supporting the operation of equipment to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Designing new dies and splice bars to optimize the extrusion process.
  • Working on curing optimization for existing and new tires by completing thermocouple and blow point studies.
  • Reviewing tire quality data to assess uniformity and balance performance and driving improvement projects.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or any other relevant area.
  • Minimum 3.0 overall GPA required.
  • Mobility & availability for relocation out of state required.
  • Incoming freshman level or higher.
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
