Department Overview

Sound Transit’s Capital Delivery department is dedicated to planning, designing, and building a world-class transit system across the Puget Sound region.

About the Role

The Project Management Intern will join the Federal Way Link Extension (FWLE) team, based at Sound Transit’s Downtown Seattle campus in Union Station. While the FWLE opened for revenue service on December 6, 2025, significant work remains for contract closeout, including major projects extending beyond the opening.

A primary ongoing effort is the Residential Sound Insulation Program (RSIP). This comprehensive initiative aims to mitigate noise impacts in communities adjacent to Sound Transit Light Rail facilities. RSIP is grounded in best practices and community-centered strategies to support equitable, healthy, and sustainable neighborhoods through noise and vibration mitigation.

As a Project Management Intern, you will be fully integrated into the RSIP team, collaborating with construction managers, architects, engineers, real estate specialists, and acoustical and environmental experts. You will support program and project closeout for the Federal Way Link Extension and assist in the analysis and development of RSIP for FWLE and other Sound Transit corridors.

This role offers invaluable hands-on experience in:

  • Project management principles and practices
  • Integrated documentation and information management
  • Procurement support and vendor coordination
  • Research and best practice analysis
  • Dashboarding and performance metric development
  • Cross-departmental coordination and stakeholder engagement

The internship provides direct exposure to large-scale transit projects, equity-focused mitigation efforts, and the real-world delivery of public infrastructure programs.

  • Assist with various project management tasks, including documentation, reporting, and schedule tracking.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, consultant coordination sessions, and cross-disciplinary work sessions.
  • Support the analysis and ongoing development of the RSIP program for FWLE and other Sound Transit corridors.

Potential Projects

  • RSIP Data & Documentation Integration

    • Build structured SharePoint document libraries to ensure program-wide consistency in acoustical testing, design, and contractor management for FWLE RSIP and other corridors.
    • Upload, catalog, and tag RSIP deliverables, including field assessments, acoustical test results, design packages, and mitigation recommendations.
    • Support the development of centralized technical references, utilizing FTA Noise & Vibration Manuals and conducting research on other nationwide RSIP programs.
  • Field & Technical Support

    • Participate in RSIP acoustical field testing and residential assessments conducted by consultant teams; track findings and verify data completeness.
    • Document homeowner communications, property access coordination, and multilingual outreach support for high-impact communities.

    • Help integrate Racial Equity Toolkit (RET) findings into project folders, reinforcing the program’s focus on historically underserved communities disproportionately affected by noise exposure.
    • Support the creation of mapping layers for demographics, housing type, and noise contour eligibility to ensure equitable prioritization of homes.
    • Design community feedback and satisfaction surveys, aligned with RSIP’s ≥85% post-completion satisfaction metric.
  • Procurement & Construction Oversight

    • Assist in preparing procurement documentation for follow-on construction work, including Job Order Contracts (JOC) and small business contracts.
    • Coordinate with contractor teams, construction managers, and acoustical consultants for field scheduling and deliverable submission.
  • Program Level Reporting & KPI Development

    • Contribute to the development of program Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as homes evaluated, interior noise reduction achieved, equity index coverage, and small business utilization, as defined in RSIP performance metrics.
    • Assist in developing annual performance summaries aligned with RSIP’s cost control, equity, and operational benefits objectives.
    • Support Power BI dashboard updates for real-time tracking of construction progress, financial status, and community impact measures.
