Kiewit’s Northern California District stands as one of Kiewit’s premier infrastructure districts. We specialize in a diverse portfolio of heavy civil projects, including earth moving, water/wastewater systems, transportation networks, roadways, and power infrastructure. The majority of our work is concentrated within the Northern California region.

Kiewit’s Northern California District is headquartered in Fairfield, CA. Our projects are scattered throughout the Northern California region, spanning both large cities and smaller towns. Your specific job assignment location will be determined closer to your internship start date. While our work is primarily concentrated in Northern California, it is essential that our personnel possess the ability to travel and relocate as business requirements dictate.

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Engineering Intern, you will actively engage in and support various critical construction management functions, including:

  • Assisting with field engineering, operation planning, cost control, and project scheduling.
  • Performing quantity tracking, material procurement, contract administration, and estimating tasks.
  • Supporting the supervision of field activities.
  • Executing engineering tasks that require standard techniques and addressing minor technical problems encountered during construction.
  • Maintaining accurate records pertaining to job progress, costs, and material usage.
  • Contributing to the planning and scheduling of job segments or entire projects.
  • Investigating problems and reported incidents, identifying, and recommending appropriate solutions or alternatives.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities) and pricing of materials.
  • Collaborating with suppliers to facilitate the handling and expedite the delivery of necessary materials.

Qualifications

We are seeking highly motivated individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Ability to travel or relocate as needed for project assignments.
  • Availability to work full-time during the summer (approximately May-August).
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to freely access all points of a construction site, often in a wide range of climates and environments.
  • Possession of reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Demonstrated passion for excellence and a strong inclination for taking initiative.
  • A robust work ethic, willing to exert the effort required to ensure tasks are completed correctly the first time.
  • A proven commitment to ethics and integrity.
  • A strong passion for safety, with the ability to actively contribute to our goal of ensuring nobody gets hurt.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative team player who can also work independently to meet deadlines, goals, and objectives.
  • Strong capabilities in organization, time management, and attention to detail.

  • Regular, reliable attendance is mandatory.
  • Ability to work productively and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others, both individually and in a team environment.
  • Perform work safely and effectively, understanding and adhering to oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use guidelines, and other company policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. The role may require working overtime and weekends as business demands.
  • For Field Roles Only: May involve working at various different locations where conditions can vary significantly.

Base Compensation

Base Hourly Rate: $20.00/hr – $23.00/hr

(Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location.)
