Job Description: Product Design, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Internships
This internship program at Apple offers students pursuing degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields a chance to contribute to the development of Apple’s hardware products. You’ll be immersed in a collaborative environment and gain real-world experience working alongside experienced engineers and designers.
Responsibilities:
• Provide support to design, engineering, prototyping, and validation activities for Apple’s hardware product lines. You’ll be involved in the entire product development process, from initial concept to final product.
• Contribute to creating the next generation of Apple’s hardware devices. This could involve designing new components, improving existing ones, or exploring new technologies.
• Conceive, design, and help bring into production products that redefine user experience. You’ll be part of a team that is constantly striving to create products that are intuitive, engaging, and seamless to use.
• Collaborate with multi-functional teams, including Industrial Design, Packaging, Safety, Hardware Engineering, EMC, and Marketing. You’ll gain exposure to various aspects of product development and learn to work effectively in a cross-functional environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field of study.
• You must return to school to continue your education at the end of the internship or the internship must be the last requirement for you to graduate.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Product design experience (preferably consumer electronics)
• Experience working with component modules (LCD assemblies, batteries, camera modules, etc.) and their interconnect (FPC design and ACF bonding)
• Knowledge of materials science fundamentals for plastic, adhesive, metal, glass, ceramic, composite, and coating materials
• Ability to use statistical tools and techniques
• Knowledge of finite element analysis theory and general mechanical engineering analysis
• Ability in plastic, metal, composite, and glass/ceramic part design
• 3-D CAD skills
• Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing
• Handheld, portable, and/or hardware experience
• Knowledge and understanding of the integration of wireless antenna (GSM, GPS, Wifi) into mechanical enclosures
• Knowledge and understanding of the design of audio subsystems (microphone, speaker, receiver)
• Proficiency in Unigraphics or Pro-engineer
• Ability to work in a team-based environment
• Ability to be proactive and take initiative
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Ability to work on multiple requests/tests at the same time
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
