Principal Software Developer | Lightspeed HQ

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Lightspeed HQ, located in Canada/USA, with options for fully remote, partially remote, or fully office-based work environments. Lightspeed HQ provides a one-stop commerce platform for retail, hospitality, and golf businesses across over 100 countries. As a Principal Software Developer, you will be crucial in guiding the design and architecture of critical system components for the flagship Lightspeed Retail product, contributing to solutions that meet customer needs, and enhancing engineering craft across the organization.

The TL;DR

• Mission: Guide design and architecture of critical system components for the Lightspeed Retail product, personally contribute to key systems, and enhance engineering craft across the organization.
• Tech Stack: Go, PHP, Java, RoR, Python

What You’ll Actually Do
• Architecture: Ensure that systems built for new initiatives are well designed and scalable.
• Analysis: Analyze existing systems and infrastructure landscape, identifying opportunities to improve architecture, reduce duplication, and make systems more performant and robust.
• Problem Solving: Identify key recurring patterns leading to incidents and non-project overhead, then develop plans to address them.
• Improvements: Drive enhancements in systems reliability, performance, and development practices, from design reviews to testing, deployment, and incident management.
• Mentorship: Conduct architectural deep-dives and mentor key members across all services teams while contributing to a high-performance culture.

The Must-Haves
• Background: 15+ years of professional software development experience, with 5+ years as a technical leader for multiple teams, and 2+ years managing architecture across multiple teams with 35+ engineers.
• Experience: History of developing business critical systems at scale to run on the cloud, and delivering key business outcomes under challenging timelines.
• Skills: Experience in more than one technology stack, outstanding written and verbal communication, ability to moderate technical conversations, handle diverse opinions, and make quick decisions.
• Bonus: Expertise in distributed systems and building multi-region systems for the cloud, deep expertise in domain-driven software development, ability to lead and guide engineers while contributing alongside them, retail or ecommerce domain experience, and experience with people management responsibilities.
