About the Job: Policy Generalist Intern
Position Title: Policy Generalist Intern
Overall Purpose: NC Child is seeking a graduate student to work directly with its Policy Team as a Policy Generalist Intern. The primary goal is to support the organization’s advocacy efforts by focusing on legislative and administrative affairs related to Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Child Health & Wellbeing for all children in North Carolina.
Key Responsibilities and Activities:
The intern’s work will involve a concentrated focus on policy analysis and strategy. Specific duties include:
• Analyzing and creating legislative power maps to understand influence and decision-making structures.
• Conducting specific policy analysis aligned with NC Child’s priorities, and other policy content areas as needed.
• Researching and analyzing information to develop various policy-related materials.
• Supporting the development of policy briefs and fact sheets.
• Assisting with policy strategy research.
• Evaluating and synthesizing administrative policies and legislative proposals that impact families, as well as federal and state budgets.
• Undertaking other necessary project-specific tasks as they arise.

Required Qualifications and Skills:
Candidates must demonstrate the following:
• Education: Currently pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in Public Health, Public Policy, Political Science, Social Work, Education Policy, or a related field.
• Communication:
• Ability to present complex ideas clearly and simply to diverse audiences.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Work Ethic/Adaptability: Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.
• Attention to Detail: Demonstrated attention to detail.
• Collaboration & Independence: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively or individually when necessary.
• Organizational Skills: Demonstrated time management and project management skills.
• Technical Proficiency: Experience using Microsoft Office Suite Products.
Position Requirements:
• Work Arrangement: Envisioned as a hybrid position.
• Location: The ideal candidate should be able to come into the office in Raleigh, NC, for a few hours per week.
• Health Mandate: NC Child requires all staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Internship Details:
• Position Type: Internship
• Duration: Fall Semester (September-December)
• Approximate Hours: Approximately 166 hours
• Compensation: The stipend for this position is $15.00 per hour.
• Reporting Structure: The intern will report directly to either the ECE Policy Analyst or the Health Policy Manager.
