Summary/Objective
The purpose of the Planning Intern position is to provide the student with valuable work experience outside of the classroom. This experience includes research, analysis, and presentation of data; creation of maps using ArcGIS Pro; development and zoning administrative tasks; and exposure to critical land use and policy planning processes.
Essential Functions
- Perform research, synthesize data, and create charts, tables, graphs, reports, memos, etc., for presentation to the Senior Planner and department management.
- Work proficiently in ArcGIS Pro to generate maps according to project assignments and department management requests.
- Draft minutes for meetings of the Planning Board, Historic Resources Board, and/or Board of Zoning Appeals.
- Attend administrative and committee meetings to gain insight into governmental processes.
- Perform basic office functions as needed, such as data entry and file management.
- Participate in a variety of special projects assigned, including the important task of updating the Comprehensive Plan.
Other Duties
- Understand and apply the principles and practices of municipal and regional planning.
- Present well-organized thoughts using proper grammatical structure in written and verbal communications.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with other City employees, other government agencies, and private entities.
- Complete assignments diligently and exhibit a desire to continually improve upon both new and learned skills.
- Other duties as assigned to support the department’s objectives.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- Enrollment in a university curriculum for community and regional planning, public administration, geography, or a similar relevant field.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro.
Other Information
- This is not a KPERS covered position.
- Position will work less than 1000 hours in a 12-month period.
