Job Description: Phlebotomist/Lab Support

This role is for a Phlebotomist/Lab Support position within Corewell Health, primarily under the direction of phlebotomy management. The position involves a significant increase in the pay rate.

General Summary:
The successful candidate will perform diverse support functions, including phlebotomy, to ensure accurate test results and a quick turnaround time. Positions supporting Patient Service Centers and client offices may be assigned to different locations and/or schedules without a 30-day notice, as determined by department needs.

Essential Duties:

Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures to obtain adequate samples from patients.
• Responsible for proper patient identification, correct specimen labeling, and necessary documentation.
• Demonstrates knowledge and ability to evaluate and select proper collection methods for age-specific patients.
Supports laboratory activities related to testing, including phlebotomy, specimen collection, computer order entry, and specimen processing, to ensure accurate results and quick turnaround.
• Performs processing functions such as verification, accessioning, aliquoting, processing and batching send-out testing, adding/cancelling tests, distributing, storing, and disposing of specimens.
• Adheres to Compliance policies, including presenting Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) of non-coverage for outpatient services.
• Performs observational competency of all support staff under phlebotomy leadership guidance.
• Maintains department equipment and inventory to ensure proper supplies are available.
• Works effectively without direct supervision.
Participates in:
• Patient and Family-Center Care Culture.
• Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys.
• Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO).
• Friend-at-Work program and assists in training new hires.
• Staff meetings and committee meetings.
• Demonstrates cost-effectiveness through efficient use of time, accurate and timely task completion, and mindful use of laboratory funds and supplies.
• Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Standard Qualifications:

Education / Training:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Completion of a phlebotomy training program is required, or the achievement of 50 draws in previous roles will be considered as an alternative.
• Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy Course and phlebotomy externship are preferred.
Work Experience:
6 months of experience is preferred, depending on the specific assignment.
Certification, Licensure, Registration:
Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant Certification is preferred.
Other Qualifications:
• Positions supporting Patient Service Centers and client practices require reliable transportation, a valid Michigan Driver’s License, and a good driving record in accordance with Corporate Policy. Employees must immediately notify their manager of any traffic violations.
