Job Description: Pharmacy Intern
This is an extensive internship program designed to bridge the gap between a pharmacy student’s academic knowledge and practical application, ensuring they obtain the necessary experience to practice competently. The program offers a comprehensive work experience across all aspects of pharmacy practice.
Program Duration: 2+ years.
Key Learning and Development Areas:
Interns will gain experience and skills in a wide range of pharmacy functions, including:
• Medication dispensing (interpreting orders, drug product selection, packaging, labeling).
• Computer order entry for medication and IV orders.
• Inventory control.
• IV compounding (aseptic technique and chemotherapy preparation).
• Chart review.
• Patient counseling.
• Renal dosing.
• Antibiotic monitoring.
• Parenteral nutrition management.
• Anticoagulation dosing and management.
• Overall delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients.
Core Responsibilities:
• Patient Care (30%):
• Accurately assists pharmacists in providing patient care.
• Pulls medications for new orders.
• Answers phones and follows through on requests from nursing or other departments.
• Performs charging and crediting of medications.
• Conducts accurate and efficient cart exchange duties, including medication crediting.
• Compounding (20%):
• Performs sterile compounding in adherence to USP 797 guidelines.
• Performs non-sterile compounding in adherence to USP 795 guidelines.
• Utilizes universal precautions when compounding or manipulating biologic products.
• Carries out daily, monthly, and ad hoc cleaning/disinfection of designated IV room areas using MyMichigan Health-approved cleaning solutions.
• Customer Service (20%):
• Provides excellent customer service across all areas of pharmacy operations.
• Restocking (20%):
• Accurately restocks medications and checks expiration dates.
• Shift Coverage (10%):
• Assists other pharmacy staff and picks up additional shifts as needed.
Other Duties:
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Education:
• Required: High School Diploma or GED.
• Equivalent Experience: Completion of two (2) years of Pre-Pharmacy studies in college AND acceptance into an accredited School of Pharmacy.
• Specialization: General Studies.
• Certifications and Licensures: N/A (Not Applicable).
• Experience, Training, and Skills:
• Completion of two (2) years Pre-Pharmacy in college and acceptance into an accredited School of Pharmacy.
• Possesses strong interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups.
• Ability to interact with people at all levels and communicate ideas and concepts clearly and understandably.
• Competency in Microsoft® Windows.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions:
• Stress Exposure: May be exposed to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Able to wear PPE, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes if required.
• Mobility: Able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform all job functions as outlined.
• Sensory Requirements: Overall vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assisted device(s).
• Physical Posture: Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
• Exposure to Biohazards: Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must comply with MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
• Mental Acuity and Reliability: Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake during shifts.
• Dexterity: Overall dexterity is required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
• Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs., and/or perform walking/standing/pushing/pulling of arm/leg controls.
