Detailed Job Description:

The Pharmacy Intern role involves a wide range of tasks related to pharmaceutical services, all performed under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Key responsibilities include:

Order Interpretation and Clarification: Interpreting and clarifying written medication orders.

Medication Compounding and Dispensing: Compounding, labeling, and packaging medications and pharmaceuticals.

Controlled Substance Management: Securing storage of narcotics and other controlled substances.

Drug Information Provision: Providing medication and drug information relative to circumstances and patient conditions.

Communication with Healthcare Professionals: Communicating drug-related side effects, dosages, and/or potential complications.

Regulatory Compliance: Complying with Federal and State statutes, rules, and regulations.

Medication Delivery: Preparing and making deliveries to patient care areas and ancillary units.

Documentation: Documenting pertinent information in a clear, complete, concise, and organized manner.

Automated Dispensing and Floor Stock Replenishment: Replenishing automated dispensing units/pharmacy floor stock.

Unit Dose Preparation: Counting, packaging, and labeling unit doses.

Sterile Compounding: Using aseptic admixture technique in laminar airflow hoods to minimize contamination of sterile intravenous products in accordance with USP standards.

Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Management: Entering or retrieving data from the EMR.

Patient Counseling: Advising patients on medication use, dosage, side effects, and directions.

Drug Information Research: Researching drug information requests and responding promptly.

Formulary System Management: Promoting effective use of the formulary system.

Drug Therapy Monitoring: Monitoring drug therapy and suggesting alternative drug therapy when appropriate.

Consultation with Medical Staff: Consulting with and advising medical staff personnel regarding drug utilization.

Adherence to Policies: Adhering to organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies, and standards.

Medication Reconciliation: Assisting with the medication reconciliation process.

Additional Duties: Performing related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Currently enrolled in an AACP-approved College of Pharmacy.
Experience: None required.
Age Requirement: Must be 21 years of age or older (due to insurance requirements for company car use).
Licensure/Certification:
• Pharmacy Intern Licensure in the State of Arizona.
• Valid Arizona driver’s license in good standing.
• Heartsaver CPR (HSCPR or HSFACPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Pharmaceutical Knowledge: Knowledge of drugs, side effects, interactions, and compounding techniques.
Patient Interview Skills: Knowledge of patient interview techniques for medication histories and allergies.
Computer Skills: Basic computer skills for using the EMR and online medical references.
Physician Order Following: Skill in following physician’s orders and relaying concerns to the patient.
Communication Skills: Skill in responding to patient questions and concerns.
Analytical Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical and regulatory documents.
Documentation Skills: Ability to write and type clinical progress notes.
Presentation Skills: Ability to effectively present information to various audiences.
