Job Description, Detailed

This role is for a Pharmacy Intern, working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The primary goal is to contribute to optimal patient care through medication management, clinical monitoring, and drug information provision.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties):

Medication Distribution & Preparation:
• Perform drug distribution and intravenous (IV) admixture throughout the hospital.
• Accurately and efficiently prepare and dispense medications, subject to pharmacist verification.
• Maintain competency in aseptic technique.
• Obtain certification in chemotherapy preparation practices and demonstrate competency in utilizing a closed system transfer device.
• Competency in repackaging/unit-dosing medications using the MILT4 program.
Automated Dispensing Systems & Inventory Management:
• Demonstrate competency in performing ALL aspects of the Pyxis automated dispensing systems.
• Assist in ensuring that all medications are appropriately barcoded.
• Maintain accurate controlled substances inventory utilizing the CII Pyxis system.
• Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking stock, assisting in restocking, and rotating medications and supplies.
Financial & Documentation:
• Generate revenues by calculating, recording, and issuing charges (e.g., OR billing).
• Perform daily documentation of all pharmacy log sheets.
Technology & Workflow Management:
• Appropriately use technology such as computers, telecommunications, Cerner system, Power Chart, and Pyxis to triage workflow for efficient medication delivery (e.g., checking medication history, printing labels, checking drip rates).
Communication & Support:
• Assist healthcare providers with phone calls in a timely manner, including answering questions, fulfilling requests, and triaging calls to appropriate personnel.
Professional Development & Patient Care (Under Direct Pharmacist Supervision):
• Participate in hospital/pharmacy department-based educational programs to enhance intellectual and professional growth.
• Assist in providing patient counseling.
• Participate in various clinical assignments to aid in providing quality patient care.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Specialized/Technical Training: Must be a student enrolled in a full-time accredited pharmacy school program.
Knowledge: Minimum knowledge of drug trade and generic names and pharmacy calculations.
Customer Service: Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
Skills: Strong organization/time management skills.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

Intern Pharmacist (CA BOP): Required.
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City): If not possessed upon hire, must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date (required within LA City only).

Compensation:

The hourly rate range for this position is $25.00 – $39.69. The specific offer will consider factors such as the position’s scope, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, relevant laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and external market/organizational considerations.
