The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Bloomington Police Department, located in Bloomington, IL. The department provides essential public safety services, focusing on the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, and preservation of social order. Patrol Officers form the fundamental “backbone” of the uniform force, serving as the primary point of contact for the community and the focal point for all police activities. This crucial role demands a high degree of discretion to effectively balance individual rights with the safety and protection of the community, ensuring every interaction upholds public trust and maintains peace.

The TL;DR

What You’ll Actually Do
• Protect & Serve: Engage in general duty police work, performing preventive patrol in designated areas by car or on foot to protect life and property, enforce laws, and preserve public peace.
• Investigate & Enforce: Conduct preliminary investigations, prevent and suppress crime, apprehend criminal offenders, regulate and control traffic, and recover lost or stolen property.
• Exercise Discretion: Interpret laws and ordinances, determining the appropriate enforcement actions and methods while carefully balancing individual citizens’ rights with community safety within departmental guidelines.
• Document & Testify: Accurately complete report writing, diligently collect, preserve, and store evidence, and provide clear, factual courtroom testimony as required.
• Respond & Adapt: Handle a wide range of calls for service, safely operate emergency vehicles, communicate effectively via radio, assess threats, plan routes, and adapt rapidly to changing conditions and information while developing officer safety strategies.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High school diploma or its equivalent, demonstrating the foundational capacity for general duty police work, including the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances.
• Experience: Meet age requirements of 20 to 34 years at the time of application, with eligibility to accept appointment at 21 years of age.
• Skills: Ability to possess a firearm; U.S. citizenship; strong discretion and judgment in law enforcement; effective multi-tasking and communication under pressure; ability to master local geography and street patterns.
• Bonus: Veterans’ exemption allowing an increase in maximum age by up to 10 years based on active military duty served.
