Job Title: Part-Time Veterinary Assistant
Overview:
The Part-Time Veterinary Assistant role at Roscommon Veterinary Clinic is for a motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys a varied caseload, viewing emergent care as an opportunity for learning and growth. This position offers 16-24 hours per week, with the opportunity for full-time hours starting in the fall. Compensation begins at $14/hour, with potential increases based on experience and skill level. The clinic values mentorship, collaboration, and supporting each team member’s professional development.
Responsibilities:
The Veterinary Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in various duties, contributing significantly to animal care and clinic operations. Key responsibilities include:
• Assisting Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in all their duties.
• Helping to prepare animals for exams and surgery.
• Aiding in performing medical treatments.
• Performing or preparing laboratory tests.
• Administering medications under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician.
• Obtaining and properly handling/preparing in-house and laboratory specimens (e.g., cytology, blood draws, blood smear, fecal).
• Cooperating with staff to attend to any immediate needs within the clinic.
• Handling animals and their owners in a responsive, courteous, and tactful manner.
• Informing staff and clients of any pertinent medical information related to animal care.
• Maintaining a healthy, safe, sanitary, pleasant, and clean facility for the animals.
Qualifications (Physical Demands and Work Environment):
The role requires specific physical capabilities and an understanding of the work environment:
• Physical Demands:
• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb.
• Ability to manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of a coworker.
• Requires sufficient ambulatory skills.
• Work Environment:
• Ability to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
• Routine exposure to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch.
• Occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
• Communication Skills:
• Must be fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to successfully perform the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position.
• Must be able to exchange accurate information with all clients and team members.
