Job Title: Parks and Recreation Internship

Role Summary: The City of Ankeny Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a highly motivated and energetic parks and recreation or sports management student for a comprehensive internship. The intern will be involved in all aspects of the department’s operations, gaining practical experience across various functions.

Internship Details:
Duration: 12 weeks from the date of start, concurrent with the winter/spring semester of 2026.
Hours: Interns must complete the requisite hours required by their college internship program, which may include days, nights, and weekends as needed. Schedules can be made flexible based on academic requirements.
Application Deadline: Monday, October 13, 2025.

Pre-employment Requirements: A pre-employment background check and drug screen are required.

Key Responsibilities:
Program Development: Assist and/or lead the development of recreation, cultural, and special event programming.
Customer Service: Assist with front desk operations and customer service center.
Special Projects: Work with staff on various special projects, including but not limited to: grant writing, fundraising, project management, tournament/event management, program evaluations, and goal setting.
New Program Creation: Develop 3-5 new “turn-key” programs that are ready for immediate implementation.
Staff Supervision: Supervise and train seasonal staff.
Promotional Material: Develop press releases, flyers, and other promotional materials for distribution.
Departmental Functions: Work across a variety of department functions, including: programming, customer service, aquatics, special events, sports complex, and golf course.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Education: Preference will be given to current students of Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, or a related field. All applicants will be considered.
Work Environment: The role involves working in indoor and outdoor settings, which will vary with tasks.
Adaptability: Must be adaptive to all weather conditions.
