Paralegal | Maricopa County

The Tone:
This is a full-time Paralegal role at Maricopa County, offering hybrid work options in Phoenix, AZ. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office functions as the primary legal counsel for the county government, providing comprehensive legal representation and advice to its elected officials, departments, and employees. This position within the Civil Services Division is critical for supporting attorneys who defend against lawsuits, claims, and provide essential legal guidance on a wide array of public law topics, ranging from statutory authority to public records. Your work will directly contribute to ensuring legal compliance and upholding justice within Maricopa County operations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Draft Legal Documents: Draft initial versions of various legal documents, including pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, discovery requests and responses, reports, and professional correspondence, for attorney review and submission.
• Support Litigation & Advisory: Assist attorneys in all phases of litigation and advisory work, including client communications, conducting witness interviews, and preparing for depositions, trials, and hearings by organizing exhibits, securing evidence, and managing witness notifications.
• Conduct Legal Research: Perform thorough legal and factual research, utilizing advanced computerized research tools and compiling annotations, indexes, and provisions of statutes, cases, and administrative decisions to support legal analysis.
• Manage Document Workflow: File legal pleadings and motions with courts and tribunals, and systematically review, organize, index, and Bates stamp pertinent documents for disclosure, discovery, and use in legal proceedings.
• Maintain Case Records: Analyze, organize, and verify records and other documents obtained through discovery, and ensure accurate and current maintenance of all documents within paper and electronic filing systems, including the central database/case management system.

The Must-Haves
• Background: An Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance, or an Associate’s degree in an unrelated field combined with a Paralegal Studies Certificate.
• Experience: Up to two years of paralegal, legal assistant, or related legal administration experience, with specific years required varying based on the level and field of education. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant legal studies, or a Bachelor’s in an unrelated field paired with an Associate’s or Certificate in paralegal studies, may not require prior experience.
• Skills: Proficient in legal and factual research using computerized tools, skilled in drafting various legal documents, knowledgeable about civil court rules and proceedings, and adept at document organization, indexing, and Bates stamping for discovery and court use.
