Paralegal | Maricopa County

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, located in Maricopa County, Arizona, with hybrid and alternative work schedule options available. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is dedicated to delivering high-quality prosecution, comprehensive victim services, and crime prevention programs to the residents of Maricopa County. This Paralegal position is vital to supporting attorneys within the Civil Services Division, enabling them to provide essential legal advice and representation to county clients and elected officials. The role is critical for upholding justice and the integrity of the county’s legal processes.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Draft Legal Documents: Produce well-written initial drafts of various legal documents, including pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, memos, discovery requests and responses, reports, and correspondence, as assigned by attorneys.
• Support Case Management and Litigation: Assist attorneys comprehensively with client communications, witness interviews, depositions, and trial/hearing preparation, which includes preparing witness summaries, organizing exhibits, securing evidence and documentation, processing deposition abstracts, and managing subpoenas and witness notifications.
• Conduct Legal Research and Analysis: Perform thorough legal and factual research, assisting attorneys in compiling annotations, indexes, and provisions of statutes, cases, and administrative decisions.
• Manage and Organize Records: Review, organize, index, and Bates stamp pertinent documents for disclosure, discovery, and use in courts and tribunals, alongside analyzing, reviewing, and verifying records obtained through the discovery process.
• Handle Filings and Database Maintenance: File pleadings, motions, and other necessary documents with courts and tribunals as required, and assist in updating and maintaining the database/case management system and physical/electronic filing systems.

The Must-Haves
• Background: An Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance, or a Bachelor’s degree (in any field) combined with an Associate’s or Certification in paralegal studies.
• Experience: A minimum of two years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant, or in work involving legal procedures, terminology, or administration, is required if holding an Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or an unrelated Associate’s degree with a paralegal certificate. This experience requirement is waived for candidates holding a Bachelor’s or higher degree in paralegal studies, legal assistance, or legal studies, or an unrelated Bachelor’s degree combined with an Associate’s or Certification in paralegal studies.
• Skills: Proficient in legal drafting and document preparation; skilled in utilizing computerized research tools; competent in legal and factual research; capable of organizing and managing complex legal documents (e.g., Bates stamping, electronic/paper filing); ability to support attorneys with various aspects of litigation and client communication.
