This role within CAMBA Legal Services is critical for providing free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers, specifically assisting crime victims in consumer law cases. The Paralegal’s work helps individuals navigate complex legal challenges, supporting their journey towards improved lives and well-being.

• Mission: This person assists attorneys and clients by researching law, investigating facts, and preparing legal documents, specifically supporting low-income crime victims in consumer law matters.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Research: Research legal sources, including statutes, recorded judicial decisions, and legal articles, to support case preparation.
• Fact Investigation: Investigate the facts and relevant laws of cases to determine causes of action or defenses and prepare cases accordingly.
• Document Preparation: Prepare various legal documents such as letters of advocacy, affidavits, and forms for administrative or court hearings.
• Client Intake & Assessment: Conduct legal intake and assessment of client situations and needs, assisting clients in completing necessary applications and forms.
• Client Advocacy & Support: Act as a client liaison and advocate, coordinating internal and external referrals, ensuring integrated service delivery, and providing victim advocacy and accompaniment services.

The Must-Haves
• Background: An Associate’s Degree (A.A.) with two years of applicable experience or a Bachelor’s degree (B. A. or B.S.) with equivalent experience in a relevant field.
• Experience: Two years of applicable experience if possessing an Associate’s degree, or equivalent experience if possessing a Bachelor’s degree, with prior experience working with crime victims.
• Skills: Legal research, fact investigation, legal document preparation, client intake and assessment, and client advocacy.
• Bonus: Prior experience working in consumer and/or immigration law, and fluency in Spanish.
