The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located in Cambridge, MA. As a global leader in research and education, MIT relies on its Central Utilities Plant (CUP) to provide essential and uninterrupted utility services across its campus. This Operations Supervisor position is a senior leadership role, critical for planning, organizing, and directly supervising all plant activities across all shifts, thereby ensuring the plant’s continuous reliability, stringent safety standards, and adherence to environmental requirements that support the entire institution’s mission.

• Mission: To assure that all plant operations consistently meet critical reliability, safety, and environmental requirements across every shift, safeguarding continuous utility service for the institute.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Shift Management: Plan, organize, and directly supervise all aspects of shift operations to maintain consistent performance and efficiency.
• Operational Assurance: Guarantee that all plant activities consistently meet stringent reliability, safety, and environmental requirements.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Central Utilities Plant managers and collaborate effectively with teams in Maintenance Operations, Campus Services, and Environmental Health and Safety to ensure integrated operations.
• Team Leadership & Development: Foster a positive and productive work environment, providing leadership to a group of engineers and other staff within a team-centered organizational structure.
• Community Engagement: Serve as a key representative for the department, effectively interacting and communicating with the broader MIT Community on operational matters.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A Massachusetts 2nd Class Stationary Engineer license is required, with the ability to obtain a Massachusetts 1st Class Engineer’s license within one year of employment. A Massachusetts Grade 2 Waste Water license is also required, to be held or obtained within six months of hire, or the ability to obtain it within one year.
• Experience: A minimum of five years of directly related experience in a utility or power plant or a similar operational environment is required. Must hold a valid driver’s license.
• Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of various auxiliary controls pertinent to steam, chill water, and co-generation systems. Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both within and between work groups. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively represent the department.
• Bonus: A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering is preferred. Prior supervisory experience or a willingness to attend relevant supervisory and management training. Experience utilizing LogBook for operational documentation and tracking.
