About the Job: Operations Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)

Summary:

We are actively working towards becoming the first end-to-end digital utility in the country.

We are currently seeking an Operations Engineering Intern for Summer 2026. This role is ideal for students pursuing a degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or a similar engineering field. The intern will engage in critical projects related to Outage Coordination/Work Management, standardizing monthly reporting, and the Lockout Tagout (LOTO) process. Additionally, the intern will assist with preparations for the FERC-required Jarvis functional exercise.

Our paid 10-week Summer Developmental Internship program runs from June 2 – August 7, 2026. As an Intern, you will gain invaluable professional development, on-the-job experience in the energy industry, exposure to executives, and networking opportunities to build a strong foundation for your future career.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in department-specific projects, analysis, and research methods, learning valuable project management skills.
  • Support the team in developing business solutions that directly contribute to NYPA’s VISION2030 strategic goals.
  • Research industry trends and emerging technologies to contribute to the continuous improvement of NYPA’s programs.
  • Undertake other projects as assigned; these will vary based on the specific focus area and departmental needs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively with competing priorities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Commitment to providing positive customer service for both internal and external stakeholders.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Enrollment in an associate’s, undergraduate, or graduate program at a college or university is required.
  • Recent graduates are not eligible for our Developmental Internship program.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the internship (June 2 – August 7, 2026).

Compensation:
The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The hourly rate for this position is based on the level of education at the time the intern program begins:

  • Sophomore: $16.00/hour
  • Junior: $20.00/hour
  • Senior (or May 2027 graduate): $20.00/hour
  • Current graduate/law student: $23.00/hour
