Online High School Computer Science Tutor | Varsity Tutors
The Tone:
This is a contract role at Varsity Tutors, located remotely. Varsity Tutors operates a Live Learning Platform, building personalized learning experiences and customized instruction through advanced technology, AI, and learning science. This role is crucial for tutors to make a significant impact on students’ academic success and understanding, helping them achieve their academic goals and ignite a passion for knowledge in computer science.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Instruct: Deliver personalized, in-depth 1-on-1 online instruction covering computational thinking, programming fundamentals, data types, control structures, and basic algorithms.
• Prepare: Prepare high school students for advanced academic paths, including AP Computer Science courses, college-level computer science programs, and future technology careers.
• Guide: Guide students through programming logic, problem decomposition, effective debugging strategies, and the design of solutions to computational problems using development environments.
• Adapt: Adapt instruction using visual programming tools, interactive coding platforms, and engaging projects to support diverse learning styles and levels from introductory to pre-AP.
• Support: Provide on-demand instant tutoring to offer immediate support for urgent student needs whenever available.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Deep knowledge of computational thinking, programming fundamentals (especially Python or Java), data types, control structures, functions, arrays, basic algorithms, and debugging. Understanding of introductory cybersecurity, data concepts, algorithm efficiency, Boolean logic, and binary representation, with a strong foundation for preparing students for AP Computer Science courses.
• Experience: Proven ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles. Familiarity with high school computer science standards, including CSTA frameworks, and awareness of common student challenges.
• Skills: Advanced subject mastery in computational thinking and programming. Aptitude for guiding students in programming logic, problem decomposition, and effective debugging strategies. Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style with flexibility to adapt to diverse learning styles.
